I've done this wiring myself and once you get the hang of it it's not too
bad if you have reasonable finger dexterity. However, I had the advantage of
borrowing the crimping tool from work, as well as a two-part tester: After
you crimp the RJ-45 connectors on each end you put one part on each end and
observe a series of LEDs that tell you whether or not you did indeed crimp
it on correctly. That tool is about $85 from Black Box, and that would
obviously negate any savings you would realize from a do-it-yourself
installation the size you are proposing.
Got any networking gurus in the area that could loan you a tester for a
weekend?

Hi all,
I am thinking of replacing my current RG-58/BNC network cable
with a hub and Cat 5 cable. Currently I plan to mantain only 2
computers for now, but want to make the change to accomodate
DSL as well as adding another computer or 2 for the kids in the
future. Do you guys recommend buying the cable with connectors
already installed, or just buy a spool, connectors and a crimping
tool to do it myself?
