A user should NOT have to go to an INI file to invoke reasonable "options".
Affecting the log fields could, and in my opinion should, be available
through a drop-down menu with a collection of Tab cards. In a Tab card
called (maybe?) Log Window, a user simply checks off boxes of desired
entities to be displayed, or employs other drop-downs, etc.
Included in the above could be check-off boxes for how the tab key and/or
space key perform.
I use another logging program for general logging (I ADIF from CT and ADIF
from WL), and in this tool a user can click a button in the log window then
re-layout the log form by moving existing entry fields around anywhere
inside the window - even the fields' textural titles can be repositioned
anywhere (above, beside, below the field, two inches away... anywhere!), add
new fields (even ones YOU create!), delete non-desired fields, etc. When
done, user can then open a window and select the order the tab key moves
from field to field in your customized layout. This allows a user to orient
the entry fields with a non-serial ("freight train") appearance, yet still
allow the tab key/entry cursor to move in a desired, logical, ordered
manner. User freely chooses the layout, then chooses the desired path the
tab key moves around the layout. >>> No INI file baloney <<<.
As for AUTOsaving, if it does not work AUTOmatically and transparently, then
it is NOT AUTOsaving. Again, this could be user selectable from a menu/tab
card: "Autosave? Yes/No" "Save after every: 1,2,3,4,5,...n QSOs"
"Write to [Drive Letter] after every 1,2,3,4,5,...n QSOs" . Once set to
AUTOsave, it becomes transparent. The only visual/physical interruption
would be a brief message "Writing to [Drive Letter]" if that feature is also
selected.
For fonts, they should be able to be applied in ALL windows via a RMB click.
And ALL windows should be able to be resized and positioned ANYWHERE. Get
rid of this docking stuff (more baloney).
Personally, I feel INI file editing is by today's standards antique, and a
good way for SOME (not all) users to royally screw up their program <<<save
an INI file copy B4 editing!>>>.
If customization is not made available by the developer in the main program,
it's due to developer choice or neglect (perhaps other priorities, lack of
time/resources, doesn't know there is an issue, lack of understanding what
user wants, inability of programmer to program, laziness, etc.). I also
feel there is some value in being able to access an INI file, but NOT for
reasonable and common user needs.
And the above are certainly reasonable and, I dare say, common needs.
