As there are so many versions of Windows out there, not to mention various
motherboard chip set and disk driver schemes, not everyone will see the
menus I described.
So, for Windows 95 and 98 with no PIO settings try this out:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q159560
And more infor for Windows 95 users here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q154435
A great article here with some patches and utilities.

Hope this helps. If nothing else you may be able to squeeze some more
speed out of your venerable PC. And even with XP computers I've noted
this PIO issue.
