It won't be long before we have only USB and Firewire or some new
standard. Just imagine what we'll be forced to do. One little cable
will plug into the computer. The other end will plug into a
W5XD/TopTen/WX0B/Rigblaster/MFJ box that does CW, FSK, SO2R, antenna
switching, CI-V, etc with it's little microprocessor. Gone will be my 2
onboard serial ports, 8 USB to Serial ports and 8 Ethernet to Serial
ports and all the associated cables. We will have to persuade Wayne and
others to open up a few more interfaces, but that shouldn't be hard.
These aren't far away - I've had a prototype on the drawing board for
over a year and there are others much better at this stuff than me. All
of the technology is out there, it will just take a few tinkerers a
little time to work out the details. When they do life will get easier,
not harder for contesters.

I still get e-mail bulletins from VAR Business and Microsoft from my
past business and I have noted that Microsoft only plans on supporting
one OS
as soon as possible and that will be NT as we are seeing with XP. They
want to keep all the
of the windows 9X features and bring them under NT.

The other thing that is being repeated by MS is they want to move
EVERYTHING to USB and get away from not only LPT support but also from
Com ports. We need to plan on only having USB in most every hardware
manufacturers PC's in the future and adapt our software to this.
