Hello,

Additional findings as try to get the computer working.

About a year ago, a SIIG Cyber erial Dual PCI Board was installed and all the serial port operation was transferred to it. By deleting the Wl ini none of the two PCI ports were immediately called. When one of these ports was selected in the WLsetup, the computer would lock up. Bingo, somewhere in this arrangement with the Ethernet card and serial card was a conflict although nothing showed up on the computer. (The LinkSys card uses IRQ 11.)

Changed the serial card's PCI socket, but didn't solve the problem.

Looked at the IRQ assignments for any conflict although all checked out individually with a "No Conflict" statement. Turns out the serial card and the "SCI IRQ use by ACPI bus" are using the same IRQ, 09. Could this be causing a conflict due to the almost continuous request of the LinkSys Ethernet card for the PCI bus? (Problem didn't start until the Ethernet card and the internet cable modem were installed.) Tried changing the serial card's IRQ, but get the message that it can't be changed.

Any ideas on whether this is the problem? If it is, any suggestions on how to fix it?

Thanks to all who have offered suggestions and encouragement. Unfortunately, still without use of WL, MMTTY and MixW2.

One thing did forget in the original post is the OS is 98SE and the provider is Cox Cable. Nothing extra had to be loaded to connect to the internet via Cox Cable.

The lockup problem happens when WL, MMTTY or MixW2 are started. They start to come up and then the computer locks up. Cursor doesn't respond, etc. After about five minutes, the computer automatically restarts.

Reloaded 10.44 and near the end of the setup a "Network setup ok" message comes up in the upper left corner. However, still doesn't work. Also, I've played with the .ini files in WL and MMTTY to get the com ports disabled, but no joy. No conflict between the IRQs on either the LinkSys Ethernet adapter, the creative sound blaster 16 plug and play, or any of the com ports - 1, 2, 3, 6.

If you have any additional ideas on what to look for, etc. please forward.

Again, thanks to all for the suggestions and encouragement with solving this problem.

Hope all have a merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year.
