Rich,
The symptoms you are having are not unique. The precise reason you are
having the problem may be unique.
One of the problems is that Windows, and individual PCs are configured
uniquely. So, what may solve a problem on one, may not solve it on another.
You could, for example, have some sort of printer buffer program that was
installed by some other program without your knowledge. It could be almost
anything. This makes it very difficult to remotely troubleshoot a problem
like this.
It is safe to say that if Writelog does not work right, it is something in
your computer's configuration causing the problem. Finding it may not be
easy.
Regarding Userport, I ran Userport on several different computers
successfully that were running WinXP Pro. I had not one problem. Others
have not had the same good fortune. What was the difference? We're back to
the unique configuration situation again. If you do run Userport, I would
suggest that you run it as it defaults in the original installation instead
of messing with the addresses to start. Your LPT port is very likely set to
a default address, so it should work without any changes. If it does not
work, it is likely due to something conflicting with Userports' access to
your LPT port. In a new installation of XP, you may have eliminated the
problem you had with 98. Hopefully you did a new installation and not an
"upgrade" of your operating system. An upgrade preserves many old settings
and tries to copy old programs to the new O/S. Hopefully, you did not
install any printers or other devices that use the LPT port.
Should you use an MK1100 to get around this problem? Sure. What about the
microHAM microKEYER? If you are unable to solve the LPT port problem in
your computers, those both are good solutions. Probably better than "good".
I now use a microKEYER on a USB port. Great piece of equipment. But, even
with these external devices, you can install other "stuff" that could mess
it up. Especially with limited CPU power.
If you are going to do a lot of demanding activities, and especially if you
will get into digital modes, you may want to consider upgrading your PC to a
more current and powerful (P4) model. I had been using a Celeron 800 MHz
computer for several years. I was nursing it along and was doing fine until
I had a renewed interest in RTTY. The computer was bogging down just
running MMTTY (never mind inside of Writelog) and I knew it was time to
upgrade. I did, and it makes a *HUGE* difference. It costs some money for
sure, but I think the reduction in headache over lack of performance was
worth it.

Subject: [WriteLog] Update on WriteLog 10.57H install
>From the responces I received I guess I'm doing something wrong. I still
haven't been able to get the new Writelog 10.57H program to install on any
of my computers useing Windows98se. The computers are somewhat on the old
side being PII's at 300 and 400 MHz. This might be why I can't do the
install.
To see what would happen I installed Windows XP Home edition on one of these
computers. WriteLog 10.57H installed without any trouble.
Now I'm wondering if I should go through the trouble of getting the User
Port program working. I understand this program allows Windows 2000 and XP
to use the LPT port for CW keying. The trouble I was haveing which started
all these upgrades and system changes in the first place is discribed on the
WriteLog web page and I am sure I will still have this problem even with the
new program and operating system Windows XP.
I only run WriteLog without any multi-tasking which made me think something
else was causeing the trouble. The processor being only a PII at 300 and 400
MHz may have helped to cause the problem.
MK-1100 MULTI-KEYER
1.. CW generation independent of the processor load on your PC running
WriteLog. The "PC generates" CW option in WriteLog is vulnerable to timing
disruptions caused by multi-tasking on your PC. If you run only WriteLog
during your contesting operations, you probably won't hear any CW timing
problems, but some network drivers, CD writers, etc. have been known to
multi-task poorly enough to affect WriteLog's CW generation.
I was also told that MicroHam puts out a unit feed off the computers USB
port that will also solve this problem.

I will have to see if this unit will work with my old computers
Thanks to everyone that responded to my request for help.
I hope this posting will be of some help to others.
