Thanks to all who helped, both privately and here.

My Commslot commands work OK. Someone mentioned using a "winkey 2" 
selection in setup - I only have a winkey type available. You guys 
that have it working - is it Winkey, or Winkey 2?

I have tried setting it up on 3 different computers, with two 
different versions of WL (latest 10.62H, Jan 2007), and still no joy. 
Since the revision history at the WL site does not mention any 
changes to Winkey support (other than a PTT enhancement) since my 
version, I assume my version should be OK for this.
