FWIW, when I owned the W5XD keyer I had the exact same issue. The fix,
at least for me, was to thoroughly rinse the speed pot with tuner
cleaner, and exercise it to get it back into operating condition. The
problem is the noise generated by the low voltage and variable high
resistance being generated by the dirty pot.
