One word of warning to all that send in their 1000MP for upgrades or
alignment.
When I got mine back, I gave it to W3LPL to use during CQWW phone while
I was in Antigua. He had problems with the TX audio sounding very "muddy".
I found that the TX audio response had very little "bass" in it.
Depending on what
mike you are using, it caused a problem. I also found that the audio
passband
extended up to about 3200 hz while my other one was pretty flat from 300 to
2800
with a steep cutoff above that. I went into the hidden menus and
discovered
that the tech had dialed in a bunch of carrier offsets, that, according to
my measure
ments, did not belong in. After clearing all these offsets, my audio
response was
back down to 300 to 2800 or thereabouts. I then used the DSP filtering to
supply
audio cutoffs. I also went thru all the PLL oscillator alignments and
found they
were all very close to perfect.
If you'll notice the specs in the MP manual for TX audio response, it says
not more
than -6 db from 400 to 2600 hz. That's pretty lousy for normal
conversational
QSO's, but that is a minimum so it should be flatter and wider than that.
It's also
obvious that if your radio responds to audio at frequencies about 3000 hz,
your
transmitted signal is going to be that much wider than it should be.
If you want to check your own master carrier offsets, it's menu selection
9-0.
Use the subVFO knob to select which offset you are looking at.
To enable the "hidden" menu, power on the radio while holding the fast and
lock
buttons down. Then hit fast and enter and you are in the menu.
One more thing to note is that even a MASTER RESET will not reset these
carrier
offsets, so you must go into the menu to change or inspect them.
