Not too long ago, what the service person told you would probably have been correct & would sometimes be mentioned in magazine product reviews (usually USA domestic model being taken to Caribbean for holiday & therefore used with 50 cycle mains with expected results from not having enough core in the transformer).

This is a classic technique used by the Japanese consumer electronics industry
to keep some control over what happens out in the various markets - though as
time goes by, there is less & less of it now.
