And when the bands are crowded the receivers must be
made narrow. And then, as I pointed out, it is impossible
to have a wideband system because the receiver is a part
of that system.

I think that one of the reasons that SSB got a bad rap from a
fidelity viewpoint is that too many systems were designed using
four-pole filters. To get any kind of stopband selectivity at all
those had to have a narrow top. So the low-end response was
down 6 dB at perhaps 400 or 500 Hz on the low end and
2400 or 2500 Hz on the high end. Pretty difficult to listen to
for very long.
