NN3W: " they'd rather watch paint dry on Sunday"

Well, that's true for the top-notch contesters, probably even for those who
are just active contesters. (That is, for those to whom "contest" = "rate
fest".)

But as K5ZD pointed out in "The Great Texas Shootout" in NCJ an era ago,
part of the challenge was to see who could/would work more of these casual
contesters. I think 100 newbies making 200 QSOs each would liven up your
Sundays in SS CW.

IF you think it's no longer fun if your rate drops down to 30/hr for a few
hours, then I don't think SS will ever be fun for you. But, what the heck,
do you pack it in if a solar event wipes out the bands for a few hours
Sunday afternoon in a DX 'Test?

in a way, we've worked ourselves out of a job. We're so efficient at
grabbing every QSO -- growing numbers of SS multi-ops, "Assisted"
operating, advanced logging software, SO2R, 2BSIQ -- no wonder there's
nobody left to work by Sunday afternoon. And any "fresh meat" that does
show up is overwhelmed by a pileup they can't manage.

I realize that I've only offered an analysis of the causes. I have not
proposed any solutions. I'm waiting for inspiration. I think it will
strike right after VE8BB answers my CQ.
