Agree, that's why I referred you to W8JI. His site has survived lightning
strikes, but it takes some work and money. You asked about an alternative to
ICE or some other kind of lightning arrester device.
An ICE or any other plug in device to your coax won't protect your gear from
direct lighting strike if that is what you are looking for. The power from one
of those lightning strikes is awesome. I've seen them set houses on fire and
splitter large trees. Your choice, disconnect everything or spend some money
and work.
