I usually use a Grundig Yacht Boy battery powered portable shortwave
receiver for this. I extend the telescoping antenna, put the set in
AM mode and turn on the built in preamp (called DX mode) and scan the
ham bands of interest listening for noise while I am close to the
source. If I hear anything I walk away to hear how it fades. The YB
also has a rudimentary signal strength display. I once took it to
Best Buy to listen for TV set RFI. The plasma TVs were unbelievable.
Everything else was surprisingly quiet once I got a few feet away. I
had to explain what I was doing to a couple of employees. They
probably thought I was nuts but I didn't care.
