Right!  It was lightning induction to your antenna whose Q was like having a
step up transformer for distant lightning static!

I used to keep an NE 2 neon lamp across my receiver input with a 40m
inverted Vee, and it got up to 65 volts and flashed when storms were 5 miles
away!
