The problem with topband contesting, especially SSB, is that SSB
splatter from nearby stations on nearby frequencies keeps one from
hearing weak signals easily. A station running super power
occassionally enjoys the advantage of "opening up" his listening
frequency because no one can operate within 5 kc of him. Thus, the
alligator is allowed to hear!

I have seen this occur on all bands including 10M when "loud"
stations have such strong backscatter splatter that they clear off
the area 5 kc either side.

So, the IG9's ability to hear may or may not be related to super
power or QTH.

Of course, we all prefer to believe that the phenomenal score is the
result of 500 watts from an FL2100 and an excellent operator.
