Brian Beezley, K6STI reminded me that NEC-2 based software cannot
accurately model all aspects of antennas with grounded conductors/
traveling-wave antennas. This made me rerun some EZNEC calcu-
lations of my Beverages with zero ohm termination "resistors."
Reviewing the saved Summer Beverage designs I saw that they
ranged from 350 - 400 feet long (rather than the 500 feet
previously mentioned). So much for my memory...
Having mentioned 500 feet, I plugged in 500' with my other zero
ohm termination Beverage parameters. With the Beverage wire
that long the pattern fell apart from what I desired! But my
the memory was right for the 350 - 400 foot Beverages 10 to 15
feet above ground level. Remember though that these software
results are suspect as per Brian Beezley...
160 wasn't the best to Europe from here in Nebraska last night.
I heard SM5BFJ calling CQ on 1830.5 around 0440z. By the time
that my amp was warmed up he was gone...
IK2DED was at 1832.9 around 0430z. A high static level was
making copy difficult and so I wasn't inspired enough to turn
on the amp then... I heard him again on 1832.0 at 0455z. With
the amp then warmed up I gave him a couple of quick calls.
I didn't hear him come back to anyone stateside.
The two Europeans mentioned were heard best using my 380' long
Beverage 12' high with a zero ohm termination resistor running
at a 43 degree azimuth. Reception was better with the Beverage
than with my transmit antenna (three [active] element parasitic
vertical array towards Europe).
