I'm feeling a little sheepish about this -- the noise turned out to be a
brand-new, recently installed USB to Serial converter, hooked to a rig no less
(not THE rig though!). Perhaps there's a DC-DC converter in it from which to
get the handshaking +/-V.
The closer antennas didn't hear it as well as a beverage, but the major clue
was that I was able to hear it on the dummy load, too.
