Mark,
        You are getting some good advice.  My advice may not be worth anything!
        IF--you are using insulated wire for the radiating part of the 
inverted-L, make certain that there is not a break in the wire 
concealed by the insulation and the insulation is all that holds the 
two parts together.  It has happened before.
