Problem is most AM / FM stations these days all contract out the work for
regular maintenance. They are all SS, and minimal work required. Broadcast
engineers are a thing of the past. Most broadcast feeds are digital, with
digital STL links, and redundant backups, etc.

I know several broadcast engineers in the US that all get paid varying
monthly retainers for a large number of stations. It's the only way they
can make a living. They wait for the phone to ring.

Most of the SS final PA's, consists of a rack full of 1 kw SS PA
modules..and a mess of combiners. If one module fails, the other nine take
up the slack. I was told they can be hotswitched, my pulling them out,
and replacing them with a spare module. The janitor can do that job in a
pinch. Or replaced when WX permits, if say in the winter time, etc.

That's probably why getting a hold of the..'engineer' is more difficult
these days.
