Let me just amplify what Steve has said.  Preforms are made from
a very hard grade of steel which is very brittle.  Hammering on them
could easily make hairline cracks that could cause them to fail at
the most inopportune time.  NEVER do anything that could change
the premade radius of the loop in a preform or I will be comforting your
widow in ways you might not approve!   ;-)
