WD-40 would evaporate too quickly.. I would prefer a motor oil on
pulleys and sheaves, come alongs, safety latches on pulling hooks, gates
on snap links.

Consider a dry lubricant like graphite on things to be left outside in
the weather.
wet oils and greases tend to collect dirt and other grit that will
reduce their lubricating capabilities..
