I just bought a new US Towers HDX589MDPL tower in May 97.  It certainly
does not have 1/4" guy cable on it.  I am not sure if all of their
models have the same cable as mine but suspect that the taller ones
certainly do.

Perhaps the ones that failed had replacement cable?
