This is a bit conservative.  #14 AWG is rated for 15 Amps; thus
two number 14 will carry 30 Amps, which is the rating of a single
#10 AWG.  The rule is: two wires of the same size are equal to 
one wire which is two sizes larger.

  2  #20  (5 Amps)   equals  1  #16  (10 Amps)
  
  2  #18  (7.5 Amps) equals  1  #14  (15 Amps)

  and so on.
