If a triband vertical (2m-70cm) was placed on top of a mast at the 74 foot level
would it be prone to lightening strikes?  
Extremely vulnerable.  

Would it be better side mount it on the tower? 
Yes, but only with diverters above and below it.


 The loss in coverage due to the shielding from the tower may not be
worth it.
It's your call, but I don't think the tower will be a major factor
in changing the pattern.
