Sorry yours doesn't work so well, Stu.
 
Used mine in contests while in Europe for over five years, mine worked
like gangbusters.
 
Did WAZ with it during two separate CQWW contests with my FT-1000D, and
had WAZ on all bands from 40 up except for a few zones on 17M in general
operating.
 
I still use one here and one at my QTH in Breckenridge, CO.  Out there,
I work everything I hear with my TS-950SDX and R-7 and at 10,000'  I
hear a lot.
 
You didn't say which one you have.  The DX-77 has better bandwidth and
is built a bit better.
 
Maybe you have some interaction with the surrounding objects that
interferes with its proper operation.  Lots of guys in our local club
use them because of deed restrictions and they are all quite happy with
them.
 
I guess your mileage may vary.

I own one, chimney mounted.  It is not an antenna.  It is a less than
effective dummy load performing equally poorly on all bands
