Hi,

The cleaning of antenna elements whilst unlikely to aid in their
performance, unless accompanied by additional coating with DX grease,
certainly looks nicer, at ground level, at thirty fifty, maybe at 50
feet. Probably pretty hard to tell much above that.

But...

Putting together the secondhand X9 is going to be a dirty job. My
thoughts were to find the simplest, quickest, least messy way in which
to remove some of that dirt.

My thoughts now after weighing the various methods,clean the joints but
otherwise don't bother, buy the xyl a pair of gloves and the antenna
should be together in no time.

Do bright and shiny aluminum antennas perform better than oxidized (and
dirty?) ones?  Or is it visual preference?
