Just checked on the web for local places that actually have prices for
drilling (big) holes... looks like 150-200/hr is the going price for the
auger rigs (and that includes the operator).. roughly twice what the same
company charges for a backhoe w/operator. So the question is whether you can
drill the required hole twice as fast as you can dig it, and whether a
3,4,or 5 foot diameter round hole is a better solution for your problem than
a 4,5,or 6 foot square hole is.

They have all manner of clever drill rigs available, too, that can get into
difficult locations (around here, there are people who need to have holes
drilled for support piers on steep hillsides, as retrofits for
"mansionization" (tear down the 500 sq ft beach shack on a tiny lot and
erect the 4200 sq ft 3 story house), and so forth.  Clearly, there is a lot
of art in this big hole drilling business...
