No, the hole his engineer recommended was 2 ft in diameter & 25 ft deep.

"I passed this by my soils engineer, who's recommending a different
design -- drill a 2' hole with an augur, 25' deep."

You may be right for a cylinder....but he said 2.5 x 2.5 x 5.... that's not a cylinder. Still, the calcs (1.157 vs 1.25) are not that much different. :-) Jerry K3BZ

I can't do that fancy math. But as a retired mason contractor...I can use a concrete calculating slide rule. (The redimix outfits used to hand them out free and you may ask your supplier, they may give you one) But... having said that, My calculator says that a 2"6" diameter pier, 5' deep would be 1 1/4 yards.

(we used to figure, 6 wheelbarrows to a yard for how much pushing would be
  required)

There are 27 cu ft in 1 cu yd (3 ft x 3 ft x 3 ft)...so 2.5 ft x 2.5 ft x 5.0 ft = 31.25 cu ft... divided by 27 cu ft = 1.157 cu yd. Hold on here. Isn't the formula pi*r^2*h=v? My calc says about 78.5 cu ft or 2.9 cu yds.

Oh, I'm sorry. I just noticed the @stanford.edu.
