(or simply a cubic yard is - you guessed it a yard by a yard by a yard - 
AKA 3 ft X 3 ft X 3 ft --OR-- 27 cubic ft)

- SO -

Multiply H X W X D in feet (height width depth) and compare that number 
to 27 to get the number of cubic yards...

EX:

A hole 3 ft by 3 ft by 4.5 foot deep is:

40 point 5 cubic feet...

40.5 cf divided by 27 cf = one and a half cubic yards AKA 1.5 CY

Don't forget to put some juicy DX QSL cards at the bottoms of those 
holes for good luck!
