Well, it IS true that once taped, they're stable in length, but
they're not permanent. It was easy to remove the tape and
collapse the things, when I took the antenna down, in VT.
OTOH, you can get replacement tubes for 30 bucks apiece.
200 bucks and you got a new beam. And, they'll rebuild
the tapes/motors for a reasonable price, too.
