I've seen quite a few requests about thrust bearings.
has any one thought of making thrust bearings out of taper, or wheel
bearings. As they are steel they would require protection from the
elements, but man they are rugged.

Hi Mike:
It would be better to rephrase your question from referencing radials
under a
R8 to referencing radials under any half wave vertical radiator. The best
info I've seen on this is available at http://www.cebik.com/vdgp.html.
Give it a read and I think you'll have your answer!
