A couple of data points regarding receivers.
Garmin has all but taken over the aviation market. On a de facto basis,
Garmin owns the market. Personally, I have used several different brands in
aircraft and Garmin is the most intuitive and reliable.
A friend who is a real outdoor type and a kayaking instructor swears by
Garmin. He thinks Magellan is junk, by the way.
