I'm no too worried about it. You're right, though. I'm probably a gonner
if I'm alone and incapacitated. Emergency response to my house is going to
be limited no matter what. There is no fire service where I live, so I keep
a dozen fire extinguishers and a hose at the ready. Police are 30-40
minutes away, whereas my guns are a few feet away. As for most any other
medical emergency, I'm better off calling one of my neighbors, a number of
whom are members of the local EMS volunteer squad. 73

No landline? What do you do about caller ID for 911?

"911, police, fire, or medical?"

"Gasp... Chest pains.... Gasp... Help!"

"sir, where are you?"

"I'm..... Gasp..... At.... gasp... Thump"

"Sir, are you there? We can't help you if we don't know where you are"

"gasp gasp...... Aaaarg!"

I'm sure you get my point. The 911 guys are scared to death about voice
over IP and cell phones in situations like this. Generally, if they are
reasonably sure what house you're in, they will break in to get you, with a
cell phone they can't tell exactly where you are. How much is the cheapest
wire line service? My wire line has no extra services on it.... Toll
restricted, metered service, no call waiting, nothing but dial tone.... $18
/ month.... Use the cell phone for long distance, or chatting when it's
cheaper than the wire line...... Use the wire line for really important
stuff, like the satellite TV receiver with Tivo!

Vitaly, my plan is 256k/512k (upload/download peak rates) for $59.99 per
month. The least expensive plan is 64k/64k for $39.99. My budget thinking
is this. For a dialup account, I need a phone line, which runs about
$30/month. Then I need a dialup ISP, which has been AT&T Worldnet. That
costs $16.95/month for 150 hours online. My connect speeds are typically
14.4-26.4k. Now, I have a cell phone due to family and work considerations,
so basically I can ditch the landline now and Worldnet.

Wireless internet 59.99
Telephone -30.00
Worldnet -16.95
Net cost 13.04/month

Hi Larry,
How expensive is "inexpensive"?

No, BPL doesn't involve antennas. Sounds like Sprint (or someone else) is
studying market demand to build out wireless internet in your area. It
operates in the microwave bands and is perfectly legal. I use such a
service here in Fairbanks. I used to have DSL, but moved farther out in the
sticks where it is not offered. My only option was to have a wireless
internet connection, but the antenna had to go up 70 feet, about half way up
my ham tower. A cable attaches the tower-mounted receiver to a modem
installed in your house. You can plug in your PC's Ethernet port or attach
a router for multiple PCs. My whole home network is wireless using 802.11b.
Very convenient and relatively inexpensive.

Subject: [TowerTalk] Broadband Internet Service Letter

Hello-
I received a letter from an un-identified company in my area { Alvin,
TX} titled a " Feasibility Survey", regarding my interest { as a rural
potential customer } in high speed broadband internet service. They describe
the service as " a small antenna at my house and a broadcast tower a short
distance away". Is this the broadband over power lines type affair that we
have all been opposing? I wonder why the company does not identify
themselves?? The return address is a local post office box.
A tactic is being used in this "feasibility survey" whereby a dollar
bill is enclosed in the letter and it is stated that if you answer "yes" to
the first question { " Are you interested in high speed broadband internet
service? } then you will be offered the lowest available price to subscribe.
A small postage-stamp size window is cut out of the front of envelope so
that you can see the dollar bill showing, as a sure method of getting you to
open the letter.
Is this legal? Does anyone else have any experience with this type
affair or perhaps who is behind this business??
        Thanks, Byron WA5THJ.
