Bare wire, of course, Jim.
Since it is temporary (I prefer to leave the antenna in the CW band, i.e.,
fully extended), I do lightly wrap it back on itself for cosmetic purposes.
But, I also use a piece of solid copper wire and twist-tie it just above the
fold back on itself to, hopefully, make a better/more guaranteed contact
with the new excess wire, so it doesn't become an x-factor length. I also
wire brush the area where the twist-tie is going to be placed to remove
excess oxidation.
When I move it back to CW, I just un-twist the tie, unwrap the wire and
reset the wire length at the insulator and cinch up the leg guy.
