The HDX-572 uses the bottom 4 sections of the 89' tower. So yes, the base section is the next size bigger than the TX-472. I just swapped out one for the other in Anaheim, but I don't know the actual dimensions. The US Tower site lists them however...

The TX-472 has a maximum height of 72' without mast and a minimum nested height of 22' 8." This tower consists of 4 sections, the top one being 12 1/2" and the bottom section is 21 5/8."

The HDX-572MDPL has a maximum height of 72' without mast and a minimum nested height of 22' 8." This tower consists of 4 sections, the top one being 15" and the bottom section is 25 5/8."

I'm looking at the possibility of picking up a used US Tower 72' Crankup tower. The current owner (not a ham) inherited it with a home purchase, and wants to sell it as he has no use for it. He doesn't know if it's the "Standard" model TX-472 or the "Heavy-duty" model HDX-572. Is there any way to tell? Do they possibly have different widths at the base section, etc? I'd like to know what to look for when I go look at it to determine the model number before I consider buying it, as I live on a mountaintop where I get substantial wind gusts.
