and here is an example of a laminated office table top...1 1/4 inch thick 
and very sturdy. Edge glued might be even stronger than this material. 
Although comes finished with a laminated "formica" type wood finish

     I have been very happy with edge glued panels.  Several companies make
them and your local lumber yard has them, or can get them.  They will easily
hold a boat anchor station forever without warping.  They are pretty easy to
work and require no special tools.  They can also be finished to be
beautiful!

I used 3 pieces that were 30" X 60".  My Bench/operating area is now 30" X
180".  The supports are standard 2x4s
