 I was told (second hand) around 1975 that the US army was making experiments 
with large toriod (ferrite) transformers what "wrapped" around trees. As I 
haven't heard anything about it after that I can only assume it didn't work 
that well. The "spring coil" type shown on the "net" looks interesting and I 
might redo the test. Have plenty of trees around my lot and the test would be 
rather simple to do. Hear you on 160m!?!?.

Many years ago, Electronics magazine had a picture of an experiment to
use a tree as a vertical antenna. The RF was coupled to the tree with an
air core toroid. It looked like a coiled spring, possibly 6 inches in
diameter,wrapped around the tree at about 3 or 4 feet above ground. I
believe the work was being done by some military lab or contractor.
  I retired in 1985 so it was before that.
