Pete,

I have done this many times. I use a small length of concrete re-enforcement
tie wire. Push it through the rope about an inch from the end and fold it
back and tape the end with electrical tape. Push the other end through the
new rope and do the same. The tie wire is strong, but flexible and will bend
going thru the pulley. This method does not leave a big joint to go thru the
pulley.

I have used the same method to pull coax or control cables in my underground
PVC pipes going to the tower.
