Having been raised on a farm, farmed for some years, then worked in
industry for 26 and then going to college to get a degree so I could get
a real job that took a lot less physical effort...
For me, the ideal size rope to the gin pole is 1/2". I find smaller
rope exerts too much pressure leaving groves in my hands even while
wearing leather gloves. (Always wear good leather gloves when handling
rope, or gloves designed to work with rope). Rope larger than 1/2" is
uncomfortable and not easily wrapped around my hands. On the farm I
worked with ropes up to 1 1/2"
Both these sizes are going to vary widely from person to person, but
those are my preferences.

I really like Dacron (polyester) rope best. It does not stretch much
at all which is a good thing when positioning something heavy. Having
used both 1/2" and 5/8", 9/16" is the size I like the best for tower
sections and antennas. I think anything larger than 5/8 is not nearly
as easy to work with.

Not a chance. It was blue, I bought a small tube at HD and used it up.
I think either 242 or 243 would work.
My purpose was to ensure that the bolts never came loose since I was
living in a coop building full of lawyers : )

I use a low stretch braided dacron that is made by New England ropes in
a 7/16" size, which I find is the smallest line that has good hand, can
be tied easily, and fits the rohn gin pole fittings. West Marine sells
this line. You don't want 3 strand since it will impart spin on what is
being lifted. Nylon is stretchy which makes top of the tower work
interesting when tower sections start bouncing around. You mentioned
arborist ropes which also are very hard lay (tightly woven) as this
reduces the potential for snags and increases the life of the line.
These ropes can also be had with a coating to reduce snagging.
Remember that you need a length twice the tower plus gin pole height
plus enough for the ground crew plus enough for tie offs of tower
sections being lifted. The expense for a good line is well worth it.
I might also mention that the ball bearing (actually nylon balls) snatch
blocks and pulleys that are used on sailboats are real backsavers if you
need mechanical advantage. The reduction in friction in the ball
bearing block is huge.
