I started out this contest with good ambitions. I was going to break the
old AK record (which I did on the 70th qso) and make one that would be hard
for me to beat next year. It didn't exactly happen the way I had planned!
I started on 20m, and it was still dark here, so signals were really weak
and I just did a little S&P. Then as 15 started to open I moved up there.
I tried to get
a run going, but it just never happened. To make a long story short, I
found myself with an even lower rate (if that could have even happened!)
and decided to
get something to eat, so I took an hour off thinking that 40 and 80 would
produce lots of q's, especially 40. Then there is that period up here,
where it sounds like one-way skip on 40. Everyone in the states is loud,
but they just can't hear you. So I took another hour off there, again
thinking
that 40m would be hot later on. It never happened. I'd call everyone I
heard, some just got KY and didn't bother to finish the qso though. I hope
they
worked KL7RA for the AK mult. I found what I thought was a clear spot up
pretty high, and started to CQ. I got one hear and there, only W6 and 7
though.
Then I realize that someone has taken over my freq that I can't hear
because lots of people are calling, but not calling me. So I do a little
more S&P.
After I got tired of repeating my name over and over, I decided to try 80m.
I racked up a total of 5 whole Q's there. S9 noise had a lot to do with
that.
My second to last qso was KL7RA, who is in Fairbanks, I was at 365
(including dupes) qso's and he was at 305. So I think I might have beaten
him,
unless he got a good run on 40 or 80, which might have been possible from
up there.
Next time I'll plan my off times a little better, maybe in half hour slots.
Also, where is all the Canadian Activity? I worked VE1, 6, and 7, and
nothing else!
I missed several easy ones, like MT etc. Never got the Dakotas or NE
either. I did however, to work ever 4 state on 10-20 in no time, they were
always loud.
Ended up with 43 states.
See everyone next year!
