Soapbox:
We decided to do a semi-casual multi-op to run the station through its paces on
160 and to have some fun. K1GQ and I did the bulk of the operating, with John
W1FV doing some time on Saturday evening. Bill and I both got a decent amount
of sleep. Static crashes take their toll.
Conditions Friday night in southern NH were great. The band seemed to be open
in all directions, though activity seemed to be down in South America. Only
northern South America (YV) and P4 worked. No VK/ZL or JA on Saturday morning.
JA is tough from New England even under ideal conditions, but VK/ZL is often
possible. Heard VK6HD and VK6VZ (weak) but could not punch through.
Saturday night conditions took a dive. Though we could hear Europeans fairly
early (approx 20-21Z), the signals never built up towards sunset and stayed
very weak throughout the evening, never even building up much at European
sunrise. We felt like we were under a magnetic curtain, though geomagnetic
conditions appeared great, by the numbers. The numbers don't always tell the
whole picture, and are no guarantee of good condx on this band. SUnday morning
yielded no Pacific, again.
All in all, though, we had a decent time and we met our goal of giving the
station some exercise on Top Band and learning how we can improve things.
The K2TOP, W8JI, and W2GD (and I'm sure others) multi-op stations sure have
their acts together. Hats off to all of them for their excellent station
designs, listening ability, and great operator teams. You have to have it all
to be tops in this contest!
73,
Dave
