Comments:

I turned on the radio shortly after the stroke of midnight -- the first morning
of 2010 -- to make a few contacts in the SARTG New Year contest in memory of
Robert "Bob" McCarthy VE6YR, who passed away on Dec. 22, 2009.

As many of us know, Bob was an active RTTY contester and his call was a welcome
and familiar one as he ably offered the rare Alberta VE6 multiplier in the big
and not so big 'tests.

Over the years, Bob and I often shared Happy New Year greetings during this
leisurely holiday contest, in the wee hours of January 1 after all the
celebrating was done for the night. I know he enjoyed this unique bit of
cameraderie to inaugurate each year's new logbook. I'll miss our quick chats
during so many RTTY events, and am grateful for his kind encouragement, going
back to 2002 as I began dabbling in RTTY contests.

Over the past couple of years, Bob was a member of our NAQP RTTY team, the
Aurora Busters, and it was a pleasure to know VE6YR was there working the
keyboard and racking up points from a prized location. Seemed he was always
ready to get on and play.

The radiosport and RTTY communities will miss Bob very much. Condolences to his
wife Margaret VE6MPM and family.

Thanks to the fellows I worked early this morning (N6QQ, KI7MT, P49X, WA7YAZ,
AL9A, K6GEP, KE7FBY and K4GMH). Best wishes to all for a healthy and happy
2010.

73, Bud VA7ST
