Comments from K5PI:
Thanks to George for having K5OT and me out this weekend. It was startling
how much conditions were improved from the "bad old days" of the solar
minimum. We saw the flux reported at 109, so I guess that explains it. We
ran Europe for several hours both mornings on 15M. On Saturday morning, we
essentially went from 40 to 15. We also had very nice JA runs on 15M both
afternoons as well. While we didn't have enough 10M propagation to run, we
were able to work a LOT of countries. We worked Japan on 10M, and I think
that's the first time I've done that in years.
Low band conditions were good, too, and we didn't have much noise.
The buzz about conditions must have gotten around in Japan, because JA
stations were out in force! In addition to the high bands, we had great
runs on 40 both nights. We took a quick look at the breakout, and I believe
we worked something like 50% more Asian stations than Europeans on 40.
George was a bit under the weather, so he mostly worked the "mult station"
and acted as spiritual guide. :-) I don't think Larry and I drifted too
far from the straight and narrow, but I always appreciate his sage advice on
band selection, etc.
I continue to marvel at all the changes that Skimmer hath wrought. K6VVA
posted a comment on CQ Contest that zero beat packet pileups seem to have
dramatically increased. I noticed that at ZF1A during CQWW. This weekend,
when I'd take off on a point-and-shoot expedition, I'd just turn on a bit of
XIT and leave it on as I moved from spot to spot. I think that helped a
lot.
Also, Skimmer means that DX can run but can't really hide anymore. I guess
they can move way, way, way up the band or maybe send a CQ that doesn't
include "CQ" or "TEST", but a lot of the old strategies for thinning the
pile just don't work any more.
Want to clean up your spot screen? You can't just delete the spots, because
Skimmer will dutifully spot those stations again in no time. Time to learn
those spot filtering commands.
On the positive side, however, it's now more possible to get a feel for
propagation by looking at a screen of Skimmer spots. Sure, your mileage
will vary, especially if the Skimmer is a few states away, but you don't
have to consider a lot of the vagaries human spotters will introduce.
