Comments:
This was a mostly a Saturday effort for me, due to other commitments on Sunday.
I was able to squeeze in some operation time during the last hour of the
contest on Sunday. Expect I would have had over 1200 contacts if I had been on
all day Sunday, as the band sounded much better when it opened at 0900 local
(as I was leaving the house).
It's been a few years since I made a serious effort on this contest. Had to
keep at it, since there were occasional bursts of good propogation to the
eastern half of the US, along with Africa and South America. Worked 7 ZS's and
only 7 VE's, go figure. Band opened quickly aroud 9AM local time and closed
around 8PM local time.
Lack of backscatter modes and limited direct propogation made it virtually
impossible to work any of the western states except for UT, CO and AZ. Working
multipliers was especially important this year since my time at the radio was
limited. Heard several Mexican states calling others, but only a few
Mexican stations were calling CQ.
I had a good run on CW around 12/9 0100Z. I had up to 10 stations calling at a
time, but my rate was not the best. A combination of my rusty CW skills and too
many stations zero-beating my frequency made it difficult to pull out complete
calls.
Several comments about the number of MN stations. I could have said the same
about VA and PA.
Looking forward to next year's competition, hoping I will be able to do a full
effort. I might make some antenna changes this summer to improve station
performance.
