Comments:
First time ever for RTTY at KE3X. Thanks to my 14-year old son Aidan KB3SPI
for spending some time in the shack with me this weekend. The 'N1MM Time On'
says 6 hours but only 2 of those were running on 20 and 80 meters on Sunday
afternoon. The other 4 hours included 10-15 random single QSO's across 6-7
hours over the course of Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning as we stumbled
our way through configuring N1MM, the FT-1000MP and MMTTY to get everything
working as best we could.
Actually we never could get the sound card to properly feed the radio directly,
so instead all 179 QSO's were made by running the sound card output to the
speaker in the computer monitor, then from there the audio went into the Yeasu
hand microphone propped up in front, then through the radio onto the air. A
real Rube Goldberg setup for sure, but very much in the spirit of
experimentation!
All in all, an interesting experiment, but on balance I missed the 'language
recognition' of CW and the voice recognition of SSB. Not sure 'computers
talking to computers' holds a lot of interest for me. In the future I may
continue to put KE3X on for RTTY in those contests where DC is a distinct
Multiplier, but I can't imagine it being a major focus.
Thanks for the QSO's and Happy New Year to everyone.
