RX Antenna: Driven element from a Mosley tribander
With the advent of the ARRL DX Multi-Single Low Power category and after a very
successful Multi-Single with Tim N6WIN in last year's ARRL DX Phone contest,
Kurt, in his 13th year operating from VP9GE's QTH, wanted another go at it
again this year. Tim couldn't make it this time, so Kurt extended an invite to
WA1Z a few weeks before the contest.
Lots of things worked well last year, so we tried to duplicate the operation as
much as possible. We set up the K3 as the operating station with access to all
antenna options. The IC-7000 was set up as a second station using a driven
element from a Mosley tribander perched on a small mast off the house's main
porch. This helped us keep an eye on 10 Meter propagation during the day,
locate needed multipliers on the second day, and do a little partnering during
high rate hours.
We re-used the same operating schedule Tim put together for last year's effort.
We split operating hours 50/50 in 4 to 6 hour blocks, which really worked well
for rest times.
At the half-way point we were well ahead of last year's pace with over 3,000
QSOs in the log. We had triple-digit rates in 16 of the first 24 hours.
However, once 0000z Sunday hit, we did not see triple digit rates again until
the last three hours of the contest.
We had better backscatter on 10 Meters on Sunday afternoon and managed to get
the attention of a few east coast stations. We heard and tried calling several
stations from the mid-Atlantic up through the Maritimes. Almost everyone had EU
runs going at the time and it was tough to break through, but we managed to work
a few stations with great ears.
A new 80 Meter 1/2-wave dipole was put up recently at VP9GE, replacing a G5RV,
and worked very well. Before we left, we assisted Ed in getting the feed point
even higher over the top of the house.
Conditions on 160 were down, especially on the second night. We had no 160M
QSOs in W6, W7 or west of VE3. Multiple visits to 160 at the top of the hour
resulted in no QSOs the second night. The band seemed pretty crowded, so our
low power signal may have been up against some tough competition.
In the end we finished about 400 QSOs and 300k points behind last year's score.
We are very proud of the effort and the station worked flawlessly all weekend
long.
Many thanks to our wonderful host Ed, VP9GE, for another great weekend.

everyone who moved to other bands for us this weekend.
