First and foremost, a profound Thank You to Alex KH6YY for allowing us use of
his station!
Congrats to the VK4KW crew on a great showing in their first go at M/M! Nice
job!
The team decided just before the weekend to change from a planned M/2 to M/M,
to maximize operating time for everyone given the outlook of excellent
conditions. The result was a lot of very tired - but very happy guys at 2359z
Sunday.
AH0A manned 160m and dug a lot of QSOs out of the noise from this remote part
of the world. Interestingly, we never heard VK4KW nor did they hear us,
showing that there was likely some equatorial TEP absorption going on that
hindered conditions somewhat on this band.
KH6FP and KH6U manned 80m together, and did an excellent job working lots of
JA, NA and even some Europe over the pole. KH6NX led duties on 40m, making
lots of QSOs through sometimes challenging conditions with Asian SSB over
fluttery auroral European packet pileups.
"Iron Butt" WH6R spent what must have been 46+ hours in the chair on
20m, making lots of Qs and working lots of mults. Our big rotatable 20m beam
was stuck for the weekend, so he was delegated to sniping mults with a smaller
log periodic yagi.
KH6SH cleaned up on 10m, working an amazing 39 zones, including the SU0 long
path through a pileup. He only missed zone 40, but not for a lack of trying,
following several unsuccessful moves from lower bands. Propagation just wasn't
there.
KH7U is the do-it-all guy who kept running around fixing things as they broke
and filled in when someone needed a break. Without him, this effort wouldn't
have happened. Thank you Kimo!
To echo KH6LC's comments, conditions seemed very good, but we also did not get
the solid European openings of 2013. We only got a touch of SP and LP Europe
each day, enough to really add to the multiplier total but not enough to jam
the log with a lot of EU QSOs. The result was a new zone 31 M/M record but we
will fall just short of the Oceania M/M record following log checking. Still,
we exceeded expectations and had a great time.
