Comments:
Finally got most of my station repairs accomplished and was good to go for this
one. Have not been on the air very much and the WWV numbers didn't look very
inspiring. Happy to see that those numbers were misleading -- conditions were
great!
First night was very strange -- almost no 15 meter JA. Signals were very weak
and it didn't sound good. On the other hand, 20 was outstanding all night long
and rates were great.
As many have noted, the Chinese Dragon OTH radar was an abomination on 40
meters the first day. Totally wiped out the band except for the lowest
portion. 40m JA was disappointing. At sunrise it did not sound like 15m was
going to open to EU, which given how bad it sounded on Friday night would have
been no surprise. Came back from a short nap and was pleasantly surprised to
hear the band wide open to EU! Stayed that way for most of the weekend.
I was very glad to have the capability to beam multiple directions at once --
it was very fruitful during long stretches of the contest when both Asia and EU
were coming in.
I am wondering how much the earthquake in Japan affected activity there. But it
was more than that -- propagation was just not good in that direction. Even
KL7RA wasn't very strong, which is unusual from here. Lowest ratio of JA
contacts (15%) here in a long time. Percentage has often been above 50% in
other contests.
There seemed to be a lot of effort being made to get serial number correct.
This is good. With all of the summer QRN it is hard to get them the first
time, especially during the second half of the contest when many of them are
four digits long.
Thanks for all the QSOs.
