Comments:
I still love this contest. I love the long exchange even if my mouth
hurts in places Monday morning. The last few years I have been
travelling as a guest op in this contest, last year at K8AZ was great.
I thought about going somewhere this year but in the end I opted for
staying home.
This was my 40th phone sweepstakes contest.
https://www.k5tr.com/ssb-ss.html
As in most contests we all try to get high rates and when I was first
starting out in my SS journey I was always trying to make the most of
those first hours. During my first few years at the N5AU station it
seems I would always work K5LZO after about hour 2 or 3 and he would
be ahead of me. And so the next year I would try again and he would
have these first few hour QSO totals that would be ahead of me. And
then one year I finally seemed to have figured out how to put more
contacts in the log faster and when I worked him I was just a bit
ahead. The long exchange in this contest makes it hard to get those
big hours. Anything over 125/hr is really flying along. A few fills or
even the operator on the other side that is talking slowly can impact
your rate in negative ways or the band changes or you just do not get
answers for a few minutes you are done. And with the long exchange it
is very hard if not impossible to get the rate back. Over the years I
have had some really great 15 or 30 minute starts turn into 125 hours.
At N5AU one year I had one of my best hours and in the first clock
hour I put 198 or 196 contacts in the log. This was on paper - here
is the first page of that log:
https://www.kkn.net/~k5tr/photo/k5tr/sslog-large.jpg
And ever since that time I have been trying to make 200/hr in this
contest. I know there are others that have done this - usually from
some much more desired mult than NTX or STX - but it has been a goal
of mine. At this point you are thinking I am going to say I got there
- but I did not - so I will be back trying again in future contests.
I did get close - my first clock hour was a 191 but I had 197 rate for
60 minutes. This is likely because I did not have a frequency as the
contest started. I used to get on before the contest - even as much
as 30 minutes and warm up the frequency and make sure everything is
working. And over the years that warm-up time had gotten shorter. But
a number of years ago I stopped doing that - I now usually do not even
sit down until 2059 or even 2100. This usually works out. A bit after
the 2200 hour started my logging program was showing that I had 197
contacts for the previous 60 minute window but try as I might I just
could not get it higher than that - it was showing 197 or near it for
5 minutes or more and I just could not get a burst of contacts to
happen without some slow down each time it seemed I would squeeze in
one or two more contacts in the minute. So it was not to be - but it
was fun trying.
The CBS rate numbers look like this:
The best 60 minute rate was 197/hour from 2105 to 2204
The best 30 minute rate was 210/hour from 2109 to 2138
The best 10 minute rate was 222/hour from 2229 to 2238
I am happy but I am still looking forward to making it
over 200/hr for 60 minutes next time.
The rest of the contest went well. With that huge first hour and a
great second hour I was off to a great start. Hours three and four
were a bit slow. My 20 meter frequency was not giving me the rate I
need - likely because I was in the extra band and was running out of
stations to work. I could not seem to find a frequency up high so I
decided to go to 40 for a bit and find a frequency on 20. The 40
meter rate was very good from the start and when it slowed 20 did not
sound very good so I just stuck it out - hours five and six were
closer to 150/hr and that really helped me have a really good number
six hours into the contest.
N5RZ did great with his HF2V single band 40. That kind of seems like
fun - N7DF did a year or two of single band 80 in this contest from KS
as I recall. And had good numbers. Shows that you can have a good
score and have fun even with limited antennas or bands in the SS.
My last mult was VI whom I found on 15 meters calling CQ with a good
signal but few takers. In fact 15 meters was long but all the signals
seemed to be 30 over 9 and I could not get any answers - it would
appear the casual guys do not even think to try the band.
Thanks for the contacts and I am looking forward to the next one.
